Bevil

Bevil, now based in Australia, was born in Nottinghamshire, England.  Working for many years as a jet engine mechanic, Bevil returned to school to become an English-language lecturer. Soon after, he found himself in Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka. In 1987, he settled in Australia.

Inspired by his time immersed in the native communities of Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka, Bevil began adapting his painting technique to a new form, awakened by his interaction with their way of life.

In 2006, Bevil worked on a series of images in oil and karrku, a red ceremonial ochre from a 30,000 year old mine in central Australia. The paintings in this unique series offer a portrait of cultural themes. We are Here features two sisters, pupils Bevil taught many years ago.

“Home now is Brisbane, Queensland; a really tranquil place that suits me in every facet of my life. I have three lovely children who inspire me and my painting more than they could ever know.”
