Dedy, born in 1976, started painting in Jogjakarta in 1995. Quickly recognized for his innovative and dynamic style, Dedy joined the internationally renowned creative community in Jogja, where his large scale abstracts and graffiti (street style) art have captured the imagination of art lovers both within Indonesia and across the globe.
Dedy first exhibited his works at the age of 20, in Indonesia and after only one year he began painting in Jogya. Accepting his first awards for his abstracts in the same year, such phenomenal achievement for such a young artist. Exhibitions and accolades continue to advance Dedy's career.
In 1998, he was honored as a Finalist in the Winsor & Newton Art Competition, followed by a Nokia Art Award in 1999. Dedy, in 2000, was named a Finalist in the prestigious Philip Morris-Indonesia Art Awards and his works continue to be showcased in exhibitions, private and public collections, and galleries in Indonesia, Singapore and Australia.
Much of Dedy's work is inspired by his life experience thus far, symbolic of both his own spiritual journey and the essence of a subject which moves him to paint. He uses representational imagery within each work to varying degrees. This not only creates a sense of fascination but eludes a sense of mystery and hidden meaning.
His work also presents broad cultural and political themes. His references to social issues are indirect and analyse national community through personal experiences and glimpses into the dilemmas of individual existence. He has endured a great deal of hardship throughout his life and this has put him in a unique position within Asian contemporary art.
Dedy has mastered the ability to use a variety of different media on canvas, which in turn gives his work a jagged and multi-dimensional effect. The canvas seeks to enlighten each viewer with singed subject matter, asking us to question what it is that is sacred to each of us.
He views his work as not only a physical object made of paint and canvas, but more importantly physical evidence of the creative process of the human mind. It is his way of self expression which is manifested in abstract and symbolic forms.
