Kerrie Warren
Born in Melbourne in 1968, she spent her childhood moving from place to place in Australia. From a young age, she found herself writing poetry and drawing, describing this now as what got her through it all, her art 'therapy.'
At 16, she left school and entered the workforce. Her first encounter with formal art education came at 25, when she decided to enroll in a full-time Ceramics Diploma Course. It was here she found life breathing inside of her, when she decided she belonged somewhere. Studying ceramics introduced her to painting, and she soon discovered abstract-expressionism and a fascination with the feeling of spontaneous, creative urges. She is awed by quantum physics and finding patterns within chaos.
"For me, it is like writing poetry. As words begin to sing their own song when placed down in such a way on a page, so do the paints, the inks, the mediums... the process itself begins to take over and at some point I become completely submerged in it all.
It is a dance with colour and texture... the canvas on the floor...no up or down...and I move around in an energetic fashion: dribbling, splattering and squeezing the paint in colours guided by my instinct in the moment.
It is a joyful torment for me as the painting won't let me go until it is finished. It demands my full attention until a climax is reached, the point where it resonates on its own and I am released from the process."
