Le Thong was born into an artistic family in Hanoi in 1961. His father, Le Thiep (1924-2000), was a well-known Vietnamese artist whom taught at the Hanoi Fine Art University, from where Le Thong graduated and now serves as a professor. Le Thong also spent time studying at the Kiev National Fine Art Institute in Ukraine, where he underwent diligent artistic training.
The realistic representation of the face of a woman or her slender hands blends into an abstract background of intensely coloured and textured layers in Le Thong’s works. The partially obscured figures and bright tones lend the work an ethereal quality while remaining wildly modern. Passion is one word that can be used to describe Le Thong while painting, and his canvases upon completion.
Le Thong has collected accolades since 1993, winning the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Award in 1999 and in December 2000, he was awarded a silver medal (the highest recognition) by the Vietnam National Fine Arts Exhibition. Solo and group exhibitions of Le Thong’s work have crossed Vietnam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, London and Singapore. Private and corporate collections are on show in Norway, Italy, the UK, the United States and Holland, while several of his works have been collected by the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum.
