Nellie Crawford

Nellie Crawford is an Australian painter who works from her studio in the harbour town of Fremantle in Western Australia. She specialises in contemporary still life, and is recognised for her distinctive and finely executed oil paintings. Her first solo exhibition in Singapore was at the Red Sea Gallery in 2008.

In 1998, after many years of painting on a part-time basis, and studying with recognised artists including: Jane Moore, Murray Gill, and Graeme Wilde, Nellie left teaching to paint full-time. Since then, Nellie has gained recognition as a prominent and collectible still-life painter, both in Australia and overseas.  Now working from her studio in the harbour-town of Fremantle in Western Australia, Nellie is represented by galleries in Australia, the UK, France and Singapore.

In 2009 she had a solo exhibition in Avignon, France, having been invited to exhibit by L'Atelier d'Artistes (an association of professional artists based in Avignon). While there she had the opportunity to work with French artists and was inspired by rustic scenes and the mellow light of Provence. These memories have influenced her latest paintings.

With subtle use of colour and a deep respect for the technical skills of drawing and painting, Nellie Crawford creates paintings which evoke a sense of tranquillity and balance.

She says this about her work:

"For me, still life speaks a universal language. It seems to transcend time and cultural differences.  From the decorations on the walls of Pompeii, to Vermeer's interiors or Matisse's fruit. ....  all of it is understandable and familiar. Still life is a celebration of the often overlooked, but beautiful things we see everyday.

And this is what I try to do in my paintings......... I try to capture the pleasure to be found in the quiet, simple, timeless routines of daily life....."
