Ridi
Ridi began painting in 1990 in Jogjakarta. He quickly became identified as a promising young artist and joined the thriving creative community in Jogja.
Much of Ridi's work is inspired by his life experience thus far, symbolic of both his own spiritual journey and the essence of a subject which moves him to paint. Ridi is renowned for his large-scale graffiti style art, which can be seen around Indonesia. Graffiti art and symbols have had a great influence on Ridi as an artist, and is often reflected in the addition of words on his vivid canvases.
The Contemporary Still Life Series, Ridi's most recent collection of works, comes alive by bringing a stunning new twist on the classical subject of still life. The naive style of images are combined with a mist of symbols and words which demonstrate a poetic expression in his paintings; whilst we can know each symbol, each letter, the whole remains enigmatic. The paintings he produces embody this lack of direct translation whilst being very attractive, indicates that his feelings on symbols find a resonance in all of us. The images invite us to study them, to look for "hidden" words, and ultimately try and find ourselves reflected in them.
Ridi has had numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout Asia. He has also gained international recognition by being honoured an award in the Winsor & Newton Art Competition, followed by a Nokia Art Award.
Ridi's works have been showcased in exhibitions, private and public collections, and galleries in Indonesia, Singapore and Australia.
